Concept:
How would you handle a mystery story in the tradition of Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie in a collaborative format? In single writer fiction the author often already knows “Whodunit” as they introduce the characters to the reader, and can plan every action and reaction to maximize the reveal at the end.
In the case of our story, nobody will be planned as the victim or killer when the story starts. Characters written by participants are the innocent erstwhile sleuths, and any and all characters outside of those are potential victims or killer. The goal will not be to be the one that solves a pre-planned riddle, but to help create means, motives, and opportunity that result in a spectacular reveal at the end of the story.
This is an invite only game to act as a testbed for various ways this can be done, all players are potential narrators that want to test and work behind the scenes to refine methods to do this. If it seems like we are making it all up as we go along a lot more often than is usual on Storium… it’s because we are.
We hope you enjoy reading.
Setting
Meal of a Lifetime is a popular reality show, following potential food writers and up and coming chefs as they clash and collaborate over an end goal of serving dinner to a panel of celebrities. More Real World than Big Brother, the show thrives on keeping those with high opinions about food in close contact to spark as much real drama as possible.
This season is being filmed in a remote mountain resort, one which has recently been cut off because of a wildfire near the base of the mountain. The producers think it will add a fantastic backdrop to the show, and emergency services expect to have it cleared up by the time the rest of the judges are supposed to arrive. Of course there are a few already on site, having stopped by for a mid-season challenge and ratings boost.
(It should be noted - there are no fantasy elements to this story. No supernatural, no superscience.)
