Abraxia Kern is a witch. Abraxia Kern is a demon. Abraxia Kern is a ghost, a secret agent, an urban legend, a nun, a so-on and so-on. Throughout their formidable years, children in the Town of Kriphidden have conjured up stories about the hauntingly beautiful and highly recluse Ms. Kern, so much so that there is an annual competition dedicated to the task. Kriphidden is a town with a long history in research and development that began with the Gold Rush in the American west and the advanced mining and panning equipment the town’s residents sold. Today, it is a compact, highly contemporary, ultra-modern city at the center of the world’s technological advancements. Most who reside permanently in the city are either transplants who moved to pursue a particular technological breakthrough or are an n-th generation Kripper whose family has lived in the city since ‘before the krip was hidden.’ Despite the city’s well educated populace and advanced technology they are collectively prone to speculation, superstition, and gossip.
One anomaly stands out against this socially connected and technologically savvy populace, and you would be right in guessing it is Abraxia Kern. The leading theory regarding Ms. Kern is that she is a witch and that has been the winning theory for 8 out of the last 10 annual debates. Arguments point to the fact that she has no automobile or other means of transport, she buys an incredible amount of vegetables, and that she is employed by none of the businesses or contracts located in the city. No one within the city calls her friend or family and never once has it been reported that a visitor was entertained at her home. As a witch, many suspect that she would live in a creepy, old, Victoria-era style home, wretched with rot and stereotyping. You would be incorrect in this matter as she lives in a spacious, white and black modern-style home set on the west face of Thunder Gorge. She has lived there alone for as long as anyone can remember.
On March 12th at 0706 hours the first report came in, then two minutes later the second, and one after another the rumour spread. Ms. Kern was gone. Not ‘left the house gone’ or ‘out of town gone’ but gone gone. Rampant speculation ignited like a wildfire throughout the town.
The player characters are tasked with researching and investigating the true happenings surrounding the disappearance of Abraxia Kern. Players will need to cut through the conjecture and superstition, avoid the authorities and others who might be wary of your snopping, and if possible find Ms. Kern and unravel the truth.
Think of this as having a sort of Goonies meets Eureka meets Eerie Indiana meets Blackout Club sort of vibe.
