In a world where mother knows best, no one really pays much attention to the unlikely fears of a child. There is no one in your closet. There is nothing under your bed.
There is no such thing as monsters.
There is nothing worse to have on dark nights in lonely rooms than a child’s imagination. But every story begins with a kernel of truth, and in this story we learn that not every monster is imaginary.
This is the story of the world beyond imagination. Don’t think that it isn’t real, because seeing is believing, and you saw it. You saw the monster, and it took you away.
The monster isn’t a person. It isn’t an animal or the howl of the wind outside your bedroom window. It is a grotesque creature that you can only imagine, because “seeing” is a bit of a relative term now. No one really knows what the monster looks like, because there is only ever time to see its shadow.
There are only a few people who have seen the monster’s shadow, and no one knows about them, because no one has heard from them since. They get taken far, far away in the middle of the night, pulled through their closets or under their beds by what you were assured was just a branch tapping at the window.
The world they see now is beyond recognition. It is bleak, dark, cold, with no sunlight to tell night from day. The days blend together into years, and while most are just trying to survive by building houses and finding food, some have been known to give up hope completely. And there will always be a few who try to find their way out.
