In 2836, the Unity went to war against the first other intelligent, fully sentient life they’d ever seen. It was groundbreaking. For the first time in history, humans were fighting and killing people that weren’t, by definition, people. By most accounts, the war should’ve been a brief affair. The Unity was technologically more advanced in nearly every way than their fledgling opponents who seemed to have only now gained their space legs. It was akin to the beginning of the American Civil War, minus the spectators who set out picnic baskets to watch the first battle of the war.
This grinding conflict lasted for the next thirteen years.
But why? The chief reason behind the extended duration of the war was that the adversaries of the Unity were unlike anything they had ever seen before. They were majestic in combat, beautiful at rest, and fierce opponents. They had a way of fighting that was almost tribal in nature– and they had these… abilities. Things they could do that were unique to them and only them. They called it an Arajiri. Each was born with a special Arajiri that they would cultivate and practice. Usually, their Arajiri would determine what field they would go into, what they would specialize in, their interests, likes, dislikes, desires. It was an entire culture based around the Arajiri. Some Arajiri were frightening, such as the ability to fray minds, start and control fire at will, or increase gravity around their opponents. Others were more mundane, and seemed useful only in a civilian lifestyle.
When this culture centered around the Arajiri was finally defeated, the Unity decided that they could not risk letting that particular culture survive. It was simply too risky. An uprising could be catastrophic. So, the best scientists of the Unity worked together and created a collar that would be attached to each man, woman, and child of the defeated race. The Unity stripped away their culture, their powers, and their identities. What they once were before was lost to time. They became the Nil.
At first glance, of course, it might be a little difficult to tell the difference between a Nil and a human. The easiest way to tell was that the Nil had tiny horns atop their heads, but, beyond that, they were fairly similar. Whatever the case may have been, clearly stripping the Nil of their identity wasn’t enough. The Unity had to make sure they were well and fully subjugated. To that end, the Unity enslaved every newly collared Nil, selling them to the highest bidder. The slave trade grew by leaps and bounds practically overnight, markets filled with people who desired a servant to do the tasks they couldn’t. The Nil began to be integrated into every facet of society as slaves.
Some genius got the idea of letting the Nil take off their collars so long as they fought in an arena against other Nil. Thus, an ancient profession rose once more, that of the gladiator. Of course, the arenas were more complex now than ever. A Nil who was especially good in the arena could look forward to many comforts in life, like a prized poodle. A celebrity. Some grew to enjoy that life. Most despised it.
Discontent surged silently beneath the surface. History seemed ready to repeat itself. The Nil survived in their jobs, some growing to enjoy it, others steaming quietly. The universe was a powder keg waiting for a match. That match was lit when, one quiet evening on Oraea I, a well-known Nil gladiator got its collar removed in the middle of a crowded street and slaughtered its owner in front of hundreds of people. Other Nil present hesitated, before joining in the fray. On the night of broken glass, a cold wintry night in 2991, blood began to flow.
Expanded Nil Universe: For any and all players who want to take a look at the expanded universe, I created a google document that I’ve filled with all sorts of information about anything and everything I could think of. I’d highly recommend it if you want to create a character with a little more detail than just this. http://tinyurl.com/ln6jeh2
Character Creation Notes: I’m going to stress right here that I can’t accept everyone who applies. Please be as creative and as detailed as possible in the creation of your characters, again, I highly recommend looking over the google document, there’s lots of details there to augment the creation of your characters.
For the creation of your character, please find some excuse for them to be on Oraea I somewhere in your bio. Without spoiling anything, you’ll be starting in the splatter zone. (Think Times Square, big open space.) As for pictures, I’ll prefer real to graphic, but I understand it’s difficult to find someone with horns, so I’ll also accept graphic design. But please, no conventional anime pictures.
Gameplay Notes: Please write in third person. Also, while I’m not asking you to write a short novel for me for every post, please do be detailed, as it gives me and everyone else more to work with. Be warned, this game will likely include some level of NSFW content. We are dealing with mature themes here.
