Detroit is a city on the verge of being reborn in more ways than the media could every tell you, except what you know from Fez’s Ballroom. The children’s show on Public Broadcasting, never as popular as Mr. Rogers has resurfaced online, and the message it has buried deep between the trains, and cloth hand puppets seems to be made for every single person to have ever placed a foot in the resurrected Paris of the West.
Idyllic and picturesque–truth and sarcasm are often twined bedfellows–Detroit Michigan is ground zero. The Silver King, Fez, Chief Pontiac, The Blue Green Door, and the entire cast of Fez’s Ballroom ran for one season in 1992. The floating reverse of Detroit, built by camera reversals and papier-mâché, was always an intrinsic youthful memory. In that single season however, were bits of information that explain everything that is happening from Belle Isle to Telegraph. (Please become moderately familiar with Detroit’s geography. It will be used as landmarks to keep all of us on the same page.)
Every thing has a path. The hidden source code of the universe propels things along relative space time. Every action and reaction; every logical and illogical choice; and every avoidance has been mapped out, plotted, and decided. Don’t believe me? The universe started with a Big Bang? Right? How is the universe going to end? Entropy? If someone knows the beginning the ending has already been decided.
Do you fight the currents and swim upstream? Do you let those same currents carry you through into the future? You’re part of those who were warned as a child with Fez’s Ballroom. How much do you remember? Probably none. Just the neighborhood show with the Blue Green Door and the loud mouth Fez telling you hello in six different tongues. Someone will remind you again.
What happens when someone fights the current? What happens when Destiny breaks? What happens to Detroit, you, and the rest of its inhabitants when you forced your hand and changed the rules?
And, because of your actions, the world stopped for those who could see it. 1992 was a constant reminder of what was going to happen. From 8 Mile to River Rouge, the city of Detroit hung over itself. A mirror of all the towers and street lights. A perfect copy from busted windows to potholes so entrenched driving on the moon would have been easier. It appeared, and it only appeared to those who have seen Fez’s Ballroom. It doesn’t mean it isn’t there however. The moment it appeared a jetliner crashed into the reverse of the Fisher Building, and from the sky tumbled debris and parts and bodies.
Is there another you?
It is 2017. Your character is old enough to have watched Fez’s Ballroom as a child in 1992. In the beginning of the story, as this will be narrative driven, the mirror of Detroit has not appeared and life is absolutely normal.
