The ship USCSS Nomad, a modified Lockmart CM-88B Bison M-Class starfreighter (think Nostromo from Alien), is sent out to track down emergency beacons to see if xenomorph activity is involved. If it is, they take any survivors on board, put them in hypersleep, and go look for more survivors. When the six hypersleep chambers are full, the ship returns back to Earth for debriefing to learn about the xenomorphs.
Manned only by a synthetic, the ship on its way back to Earth with six sleeping survivors when the synthetic realizes that a xenomorph got on board during the last stop. The synthetic wakes the survivors to stop the threat.
Each player character is originally from a different ship or colony, and they know at most one other character from the start, or no one. Their job description is from the previous assignment, now they’re one of six survivors. It is possible to have more than character of each nature. What happened when the xenomorphs originally attacked is up to the player, the only established fact is that only one or two members survived each attack.
In this story, your character can only die by your own choice, but that can be a very dramatic event. If it feels right, or if your interest in the story is waning, consider killing your own character because character death is something that happens in Alien stories.
As an experiment, I will play a character in this game. I will create it after the players are done, to round out the group.
¤ Note the harsh word limits: 50 for players and 100 for the narrator. The focus is on immediate action and dialogue.
¤ Write in present tense. If you write in past tense, I’ll ask for a rewrite.
¤ Use a black-and-white silhouette avatar.
¤ Don’t be afraid to be generic. Make an obvious decision rather than wait for inspiration.
¤ Don’t be afraid to take control of the story. Be bold.
¤ The aim is six players, and if you can’t continue, please hand the character over to another player. My recent experience is that people quickly stop posting and go missing.
¤ There won’t be challenges enough to each spend three cards in every scene. At first, spend one card per move to give everyone a chance to act. If someone doesn’t act for a week or so, the remaining players have cards left to conclude the challenge.
¤ Most of all, have fun!
