We all know the standard ideas when it comes to religion in fantasy. Large sprawling kingdoms always have churches dedicated to a large pantheon of gods that are actually real, and are represented by orders of worshippers. Sometimes religions are so strong in these worlds that entire countries believe in one god above all else, leading to exciting scenarios with religious crusades and the gods coming down from the skies to fight for their chosen people. Those a are interesting, but no one ever speaks of the more monstrous gods. The Old Ones, the Evil members of the pantheon, are almost always only worshipped by cults, which as large as they may be, are merely cults. This seems strange to me, as I’ve always wondered what an entire country dedicated to one evil god would look like. Surely not all of the people would be evil, they would simply follow the religions based on the attractive parts of it, such as power and long life. So, my idea was born. What if, there was an entire country where those who were worshippers of the darker sort of God, the Lovecraftian horrors, had a country of their own? And what if a group of adventurers based their operation in this country? Let’s see what happens.
