Ninth of Douropen I was summoned at sunrise as my council desired an audience. The Master of State, the Master of Defence Amil, General Baras, Vice Admiral Hiumon. Court goblin appeared and was ushered out a little later. Clean-up ensued. Master of State explained, supplied by fellow councillors, that the Sergans, in the name of their own professed need for security, had seen fit to occupy our lands before their rivals did as much. As a consequence, they had walked across the land borders, crossed the ice to pass the ocean, and several watchtowers had fallen within minutes. Arrows flew in the capital and severan Sergan wyverns were cycling over the city.
General Baras informed me that our eagle lairs had been struck and were burning, but that her position was that we were not to surrender to the Sergans. I suggested, after consulting the memories, that for the sake of those watching us in other countries, we should continue token resistance for a time and ideally punch them in their stupid faces (‘them’ unclearly defined. Sergans? Council?). Once informed that at best this would win us hours, I was encouraged to open negotiations to secure life and limb of my people before the wyverns began their attacks. I gave orders to cease the struggle.
Three of my personal guard were harmed in the skirmish as battle continues for some time before the word was out. After the council, we parted. No further information was available.
Once, this was a great land, but that was centuries ago. Increment by increment, your ancestors and those who ruled them held claim on less and less land. Still, life in a small country beyond notice has its attractions, and you have mostly passed under the notice of other powers too busy fighting each other, ruled by your ancestral monarchy and a council partially decided by popular vote.
Well. Until today. The darkest day in Daoran history. Two hours of token, pathetic resistance was all your state could offer, and now you’re told you are to behave. Cooperate. Might be wise if you want to survive. Might be more agreeable to your conscience to do anything but that.
Whether you serve your queen, cooperate in the name of profit, resist in small or large ways, your life has changed. There may be light ahead, but you’ll have a while to chase it.
Let slip the passive-aggressive cake-baking and pig-breeding. Survive.
Good luck, citizen.
