PREMISE
Dreamwalkers is a game featuring characters loosely based on those from the works of Lewis Carroll. Players will take on the role of Dreamwalkers, characters from one of six different worlds led in their dreams by the Alis, steward of good dreams. The six worlds from which the Dreamwalkers come are out of phase from each other. The Nightmare King, steward of nightmares, hopes to bring them into phase and under his rule with the help of a council known as the Ring. The Ring is comprised of the overlords of the six planets, each of whom has a somewhat tenuous grip over their world. The Alis must lead her own team of Dreamwalkers to overthrow the Nightmare King and his Ring or all worlds will fall.
REGARDING THE PLOT
By day the Dreamwalkers will be trying to stop their individual villains. In dreams they will work together to try and stop the Nightmare King. Events and worlds will overlap eventually, but the format will start by switching between waking and sleeping worlds from scene to scene. There is a general plot line in place for the events which will take place in the dream world (three points and a final confrontation), but I do not have anything planned for the waking worlds as for how to stop the individual members of the ring, so expect to have to give me more inspirational sparks there. I will likely have each villain have its own scene as part of the “final confrontation” a la mini-bosses-leading-up-to-the-final-boss, though depending on how things hash out, it’s possible you could stop them before you reach the Nightmare King himself.
REGARDING THE ALIS
“The Alis” is actually a title. When one Alis dies, another is born. Each one is different and it is possible for your Alis to die. You have infinite Alis’s really, but of course that does affect the story, so do with that what you will. The Alis is also the only one in your party with the capacity to directly change the Dreamworld itself (call up a storm, create a pit, call up creatures). Given that the Nightmare King and The Alis have equal powers, they cannot overcome the other entirely on their own. Likewise, though the Nightmare King can be killed, another will be born in his place should that happen. An Alis or Nightmare King can be born as any age, race, gender, height, weight, etc.
REGARDING THE DREAMWORLD
The Dreamworld is where everyone’s consciousness goes when they sleep. Though the Nightmare King and/or Alis affect what each individual sees, there is a regular (though not tangible/physical) world behind the illusions. An easier way to think of it might be that the Dreamworld is the backstage area of a theatre, with the Nightmare King and Alis as tech crew and people’s dreams as the plays on stage. When one becomes a Dreamwalker, they see the dreamworld as it is, not as the Nightmare King and Alis make it appear to be (they see the backstage area instead of a show). Though the Dreamworld itself cannot be directly changed by Dreamwalkers (they cannot call up a storm, create a pit, etc.), they can interact with items/creatures inside it just as they would with items/creatures on their own worlds. It is also generally affected by the dream states of the collective consciousnesses visiting it. Essentially if you guys do a bad job at stopping your baddies and everyone on your planets is suffering, their dreams are all going to be bad and the Dreamworld will get more stormy or windy or scary, whereas if everyone is starting to have good dreams, it will become more sunny, cheerful, etc.
