2061
By this point in man’s history all pretenses of the “myth” of climate change had evaporated.
Equatorial regions of Africa, the Middle East, Southern Asia, Southern Europe and Latin America were devastated by drought, creeping desertification, torrential flooding and persistent sea level rises.
Many areas of the world had become uninhabitable with hundreds of millions of people becoming refugees in their own lands as they attempted to resettle in more northerly and southerly latitudes. Once thriving cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dubai and Mexico City were abandoned. Coastal areas lacking adequate defenses were inundated by rising sea levels.
In Europe many were looking to Britain as a “lifeboat” which, despite being subject to increasingly volatile weather was relatively stable compared to the likes of Spain, Italy and the Balkans.
A similar situation occurred in Canada which had actually prospered from climate change due to improved agriculture and precipitation. Canada now faced a mass exodus of immigrants from the USA, Mexico and elsewhere.
Localized conflicts over food, water, territory and resources were erupting around the world.
As it had for thousands of years humanity found a way to struggle on; to take on these new burdens, to adapt and to survive. One such endeavor of mans perseverance was the Eden Project.
The Eden Project was the brainchild of Cormorant Technology, a group of like-minded scientists and visionaries who dreamed that through the technological advancements made in the second half of the twenty-first century there could be found a way to catalog the biological resources of the world, a sort of genetic archive for use in stabilizing the earth’s climate, its populace and its flora and fauna in the event of what many believed were numerous imminent unavoidable global ecological disasters.
By December of 2061 their accomplishments include completed database mapping of all Human and Animal Genomes, perfection of nanofabrication technology, construction of a dozen massive artificial biome complexes around the world and development of a voluntary cryonic preservation program.
Part of this initiative involved human volunteers willing to enter cryonic stasis and be virtually archived so that one day they might serve as ambassadors to their own descendants, to be a face of man’s history; people who truly understood the worlds challenges in the time before the great disasters.
Volunteers for the cryonics program came from all walks of life, all ages, all races and genders. The first volunteers were awarded lucrative signing bonuses that benefited their families and so many of these came from the lower and middle class. As the state of the world worsened people began to see the Eden Project as a way to live a better life, to awaken in a better future and in some cases it gave them a great sense of purpose.
The term “cryoneers” is coined in reference to these brave souls willing to undergo the cryonic stasis process in the hopes that they may one day be reborn.
2207
Revived from stasis over one hundred and forty years after entering cryosleep, you have awoken in an unknown derelict underground facility but it is not the one you remember.
After leaving your cryopods you will begin to make your way through the crumbling science facility. Along the way you will find layers of dust over everything, signs of sabotage; evidence that there had been violence at some point while you all slept.
What is the state of the world? Why weren’t you revived sooner? Where are the Cormorant science and medical staff that should have greeted you on revival?
These questions and others drive your characters in their bid for answers and a route to the surface.
Expectations
The world that Eden Project takes place in is at times dark, gritty, bleak and horrifying and influences have been drawn from The Thing, Half-Life, Dead Space, True Detective, Alien, Eden Log, Sunshine and Event Horizon among many others.
I am looking for players who are comfortable playing believable, real-world characters in a near future sci-fi setting. I require players who will work to integrate their characters backgrounds, personalities and motivations into the narrative and experience of the game.
The plot is flexible depending on the actions of the players and their characters.
Write in 3rd person, omniscient past-tense only.
You will write only for your own characters perspective and not take liberties on other peoples characters, including mine (NPCs).
Superhero and cliche sci-fi tropes will not be considered.
You should be a proactive player, co-operative and willing to have your character face adversity from the world and its inhabitants, as well as from the other characters at times as fits the story.
Custom cards are required - I want to get an idea of the type of player you are before we start.
