Legends tell of the great hero Robert Davis who led the people to paradise. In the midst of the Cold War when it seemed everyone had their finger on the button, he gathered his flock and shepherded them down to the safety of the world below. A huge news story, it was quickly forgotten by the Surface in a matter of months, buried under the tragedy of the times, leaving New Cleveland to its own devices, long forgotten by those up above.
As generations passed and the world above forgot about them, so too did they forget about those above. Stories were told of mutual destruction and the world exploding into plumes of flame that killed all those above. But those below lived. For generations they lived and loved in darkness and unreliable artificial lights, their culture stuck in the 1950s, but they lived… and they were happy.
Now… things seem to be falling apart. The infrastructure built to last forever has begun to fail as time takes its inevitable toll. The city’s lights are going out, food production is at an all-time low and even parts of the large, bustling city have been shut down due to lower populations. But it’s safer, they say, safer down here in the city. They say the city is flourishing. Again and again, they lie.
Is it working?
The Ministry, the governing body of New Cleveland, is hiding something. Historical records of the world up above have been under lock and key for some time and the residents only know of the Surface the few scattered stories and rumors they’ve been able to hear. With their city falling apart around them, it seems the only option is to travel to the Surface for help, but the Ministry refuses to allow anyone to leave.
A small group of people is determined to succeed. Will they be able to reach the Surface? Will anything be waiting for them there when they do? And even if they do find help, will they return to save their city or leave it to be lost once more to the flow of time?
