Everyone has their own original piece of magic, their “shadow” from the birth of the world. This comes in the form of a familiar that they can make visible at will. (Said familiar is always visible to them, and looks different for everyone.) For most people, their Shadow is quite weak, and so they can’t see it or make it visible. For others, their Shadow is strong enough that it manifests. Their Shadows are loyal to them, and will do what they say. By commanding the Shadow to do certain things, they can perform feats of magic.
A gang of powerful Shade Thieves has emerged, and mages are disappearing left and right. They steal their power by killing the mages and burning the bodies. When someone dies, their shadow goes dormant in their body. However, if the body is burned, the shadow is released and goes into the nearest person. A call has gone out for some brave souls to pursue and capture these murderers. An airship crew will be assembled to track down the Shade Thieves and bring them to justice.
This can really go any direction, but we’ll try to keep it SFW (swearing at a minimum, nothing terribly graphic). In your application, please include what animal your Shadow appears as (mythical is okay, but real would be better; ocelot, swan, bear, iguana, and shark are already taken in story).
A quick note about Shadows: they are always visible in their shape to their “owner”, what it means when they manifest is that they become visible to others. They’re more like familiars than some nebulous power.
