It is 1816 and summer has come to the English village of Farthington. It is finally time to venture outdoors for shopping, strolling, picnics and frolicking. Shopkeepers brighten up their establishments with a fresh coat of paint in anticipation of the visitors who flock to the town from London, glorying in the fresh air and the feeling of having shaken off the strictures of the city for the freedom and space of rusticating in the country.
Farthington residents would bristle at the idea of their bustling community as anything countrified or lacking in sophistication. There is a small but thriving society and activities abound for those who know where to look for it. And we, gentle readers, are among those chosen few.
