Scientists of today say that roughly 1500 years ago began a string of unfathomable disasters on this worn and ragged planet of ours. The first was a mega volcano eruption. The blast covered a solid portion of the planet in a layer of soot and ash, blotting out the sky and choking out life in whatever civilization existed. The second disaster was far worse than the first. A three hundred-year barrage of solar flares powerful enough to brush the magnetosphere and ionosphere aside destroyed what little was left of our world. Archaeological traces of the world before these disasters exist, but they are rare and tainted by hundreds of years of decay.
Life was almost completely wiped out on Earth, but like life usually does, it persisted. It hung on by a thread and gradually started to work its way back up from the Dust. The creatures that survived were changed, evolving and mutating into far different beasts. The creatures that didn’t became long forgotten.
Humans also remained, a little worse for wear, but still, humanity lived on. Man learned to survive in a new harsh environment, adapting to each challenge that was thrown at them. Although they became scattered, mankind built new societies and developed new technologies using relics of the past. Now humanity looks to the future. The world is far different from what it was before, and it is ready to be discovered anew. Wonders and dangers man never knew existed or could exist lay waiting out there in the far reaches of the frontier, calling humanity out of the Dust.
