The land of Osnain is beset by the Dark. It is a faceless, insidious, and corruptive force; capable of twisting the human heart, soul, and mind towards madness and evil, until the body reflects the corruption within, until they become Damned, and join the Dark forever.
There is no kind and loving force in this land, and only by resisting the Dark do the people of Osnain get by.
The Ordo Lux has dedicated itself to stopping the spread of the Dark through the years, and has established cathedrals through the lands to bring the people together. There is a dark secret to the Order of Light, however. The Slayers. A hand selected group of those who have been caught in the act of murdering an innocent, the most corrupting act that a human can commit. Those caught are offered the chance of redemption through service to the Ordo Lux, or to be slain outright. Those who have murdered seem to gain some power in recognizing the influence of the Dark, and are able to do battle with the minions of the Dark.
These Slayers are overseen by the Confessors, a group of militant monks, charged with ensuring that their charges do not succumb to the Dark, and to slay those who do. If the Slayer they are assigned to guard is mortally wounded in a fight against the Dark, the Confessor is charged with ending the Slayer’s life, and ensuring that their are no remains to be used by the Dark’s minions.
This setting is inspired by others such as the Witch Hunters of Warhammer, and The Witcher. Technology is limited to gunpowder weapons that are slow to reload, but effective against the unholy terrors. Several normal humans could expect to deal with a creature of the Dark, but a Slayer could do it on their own, due to the Dark’s influence over them.
The Dark itself is not a tangible force, though those under its influence sometimes think they are spoken to by the Dark in their minds, either through pleas or threats. The Dark may send its minions: humans or animals that it twists to its purpose to attack and spread misery. Or it may simply work to corrupt, either a whole town, a single person, or even a section of land, until it is an unwholesome place of evil.
There is no magic to speak of in this setting, but Slayers are powerful fighters against the Dark, and Confessors are highly trained in the use of their firearms.
Feel free to add strengths, weaknesses, or subplots, but stick to a Slayer or Confessor. I am looking for a 1 to 1 ratio to start with. Those who bow out without working their death into an action scene may come back as a servant to the Dark.
UPDATE
There are several submitted characters waiting for review, and I’ll bring some in once the introduction scene is over, as an already established Confessor/Slayer team. I’m sure that like most Storium games, people will drop out, or lose interest over time, and we’ll deal with that. So just be patient if you’re not immediately included.
