The Octopus Society is Celeste City’s premier institution for exploration and scientific discovery. Its board of directors is comprised of the city’s richest and most powerful – including, it is rumored, the Governor herself.
Membership is by invitation only, and is extended only to the best and the brightest scientists and explorers. Members are encouraged to pursue their passions, and funding is often available, either through the club itself or by partnering with a wealthy patron.
To the west of Celeste City lies the Endless Sea, so vast that it has never before been crossed. Countless steam-powered airships have made the attempt and failed; they cannot carry enough coal for the long journey. But recent breakthroughs in heliotropic technology have resulted in the development of the heliotronic engine, which can capture sunlight and convert it to electricity.
Alacrity is the first airship equipped with a heliotronic engine, and the Octopus Society is anxious to send her west.
