The big city, circa 1935, where men are men and women are….anything but what Rebecca St. Clair actually is.
See, Rebecca is a private eye, only…she’s so private of an eye that only one other person knows about it. That guy is Parker McBride.
Thing is, McBride is the one who looks the role. Big, tough, rugged and….intellectual. Much too intellectual to be a genuine private dick hisself. Which is fine, cause that ain’t what he is; He’s an author. The country’s premier crime novelist, to be exact.
Now, how these two came to be what you might call acquainted is due to the fact that the two of them need one another to pull off the racket they got going. Namely, impersonating the other, or so you might say.
“McBride The Author” poses as “Dirk Cooper The Private Eye”, a name which oughtn’t be too hard to remember since it’s the name of the protagonist of his book series. Up until recently, folks thought the character to be only that; a character. Fictional-like, ya get it? And he was…fictional, I mean…up until McBride figured he’d sell a lot more books by using that name in what you’d call real life, see?
Anyway…Rebecca, she’s the backside, the behind the scenes, the one doing the actual job while making out like she’s nothin’ but a bookstore owner, one of the few, what you call, lady entrepreneurs this city has got.
The Tomes is the name of the joint, and it’s located right below Dirk’s office upstairs, so’s that when a client comes in to see him, Rebecca shoots up the back way, eavesdrops in on the conversation, and then meets up with McBride downstairs in the bookstore later, after the client has left.
From then on, they work the case together till it gets solved; Her doin’ the detecting, him taking notes as ideas for his next book. Only nobody knows that, see? What they think is that it’s a hard boiled detective workin’ the case and his pretty Gal Friday, the bookstore owner slash girlfriend, keepin’ him company…runnin’ errands and the like…and that works just fine for McBride & St. Clair.
So long as each of them gets what you call fulfilled in their chosen field of work…no matter how deceptive they gotta be about what that work really is…it’s a relationship that’s what you’d call of mutual benefit to them both.
