Mystery, Pennsylvania.
Mining town. Logging town.
Salt-of-the-earth, two-stoplight town.
Rarely had the occasion of livin’ up to its namesake, and that’s the truth. Hell, there are only two peculiarities in recent memory even worth mentioning:

Not exactly salt-of-the-earth material.
Oh, did I mention the year is 1985? That’s an important fact, ain’t it.
A long pause
Alright, kids. Since you’re new here (said you’re in town for the summer?), and since you’re still hovering on my front porch, I’ll let you in on a little secret.
(A somber frown stretches across the wizened old face).
This town is damaged goods.
All ‘cause they built the loop, mind you. Strangest thing you’ll ever see. Four miles in diameter. Hollow metal tunnel set on concrete stanchions like some kind of alien freeway peeking above the treeline. One big circle to nowhere. And nowhere’s where it got, by the way. ‘Cause it never were finished.
They called it a particle accelerator. Whatever that is. (And whoever ‘they’ are, since the place is abandoned).
You heard right. Some kind of cutting edge technology, right here in the middle of noth’n. But the night of the big quake, nine people disappeared from that place. Some kind of crew of foreign scientists, engineers. Guess they were too smart for their own good.
Things ain’t never been the same in town since then.
And I mean it.
Point is, kids, Mystery is downright mysterious. And dangerous, too. Some people claim they hear rumblings from that particle accelerator at odd hours, abandoned or not. And there’s been lots of sightings in the woods—I won’t say what, wouldn’t want to scare ya. But I’d stay clear, if I were you.

But that ain’t what you’re gonna do, is it? I see it in your eyes.
You want to figure this here mystery out, don’t you? Find out what happened to those people .
Well, kids, I’d just cool your heels. The local authorities, the FBI… you name it… they didn’t find a damn thing.
So neither will you.
Even if you are the meddlesome type.
