When Vivian was young her father told her to beware of Lestor Cassian, but Lestor Cassian wouldn’t let her stay away. Something about his alluring presence entranced Vivian, but when war brakes out and Lestor is killed, Vivian practically forgets about him. After marrying Richard Bentley in a loveless but financially necessary marriage, she discovers Richard has a mistress, who claims that Lestor is alive, and the past is quite as Vivian thought it was.
