Long ago, the ancient gods and demons fought one another for supremacy over the world. The fog of war engulfed the land. The human, elf, and dwarf kingdoms rallied to either side of the conflict.
The gods promised eternal peace and prosperity. A land with no hatred or suffering. But also no happiness or earthly desires-all the things that made life worth living. A society where everyone followed the same laws and fulfilled their given role simply because they had no other choice.
The demons wanted to create a world of freedom and pleasure. One where all could do as they wished so long as they had the power to do so. In such a world, only the strong would thrive while the weak perish with no laws to protect them. All ruled by none but chaos and anarchy.
In their efforts to break the stalemate, both sides created a potent weapon they hoped would win them the war: The Dragons.
But dragons do not take well to being tamed. They became smarter, learnt the common tongue, and even practised magic, something thought to be only usable by gods and demons.
By the second century of their existence, dragons from both sides banded together and turned against their former masters. In desperation, the gods, demons, and all their earthly subjects fought together against the dragons. After a century of bloody conflict, the dragons were defeated in a final battle but their ancestors remained in the form of wyverns, drakes, hydras, wyrms, and other lesser draconic beasts.
All the gods and demons became casualties of the war, but before they perished into the beyond, they gave the earthly races one final gift: magic. The bravest of those who fought against the dragons were given the imaginable power of magic and the ability to pass that gift of gods and demons to their descendants.
Two thousand years later and the land is thriving. The great kingdom of Avalon, home to people of all races and ruled an enlightened human king, is protected by her knights. These knights are members of the nobility, descendants of heroes from the Dragon War. For centuries they have protected this land and will continue to do so for many centuries more.
Not all nobles have magic, however, and not all peasants are bereft of magic. There have been many noble houses stripped of their titles over the ages. These disgraced nobles went on to have families with common folk, bleeding the gift of magic away from the nobility and into the general populace. Even now, talking of such things is a controversial subject most nobles aren’t fond of.
You are an aspiring knight in the kingdom of Avalon. Whether you are a member of nobility or a common soldier who earned the recognition of his lord, you have been given the honour of squiring for one of the three greatest knights in Avalon: Sir Adrian the Soul Drinker of House Asher, Dame Beatrice the Shield Breaker of House Bailey, and Dame Clara the Shining Dawn of House Celeste.
They will be your new teachers in matters of arms, magic, and courtly graces. Learn all that you can from them, for not all is as it seems in this time of peace. Soon Avalon and the other kingdoms will have to brace itself for an oncoming storm…
