Humanity has breached the walls of the light-speed limit and spilled out of the solar system like an oil stain spreading on a bare floor. The leading edge of our expansion is the Argus Initiative, a fleet of tiny drone craft that skim through new star systems, observing, recording, then returning home. The human race itself is plodding along behind, settling new worlds and comfortably occupying the galaxy one planet at a time.
Now that pattern of expansion has been broken, when one of the drones returns with the recording of an indecipherable radio signal. A mission is hastily organised as factions vie to be the first to reach the newly designated world of Parthenope and possibly make contact with an alien civilisation, but the first ship to arrive finds an empty world, with only one single trace of the civilisation that may once have been here.
This is a classic cosmic-mystery story: the characters are the experts shipped to Parthenope to investigate the source of the radio signal and decipher its meaning for the whole human race, only to be confronted with a puzzle on a world whose ecology they don’t fully understand. Typically, scenes & conflicts will fall into one of three types:
Confronting the native flora & fauna of an alien world and reaching accommodation with it.
Investigating the sole artificial structure on the planet and trying to divine its purpose.
Resolving interpersonal issues with other members of the crew.
The game will start with arrival in the Parthenope system and end with some kind of solution or response to the mystery.
