The coming of the Age of Superheroes was a surprise to the world. Fifty years ago, one percent of one percent of the population spontaneously manifested abilities beyond the human norm. Nobody knew why. Leftover radiation from Fukushima? The comet that passed Earth? Something added to the drinking water? Studies have borne no explanation.
As expected with a random sampling, some used their newfound power to enrich themselves. Some subjugated whole societies. Some took up the mantle of defenders of the poor. Some fought to free the oppressed. Some did nothing at all.
As time passed, the numbers declined. Death through violence took many. Some succumbed to disease. A few from old age.
Now, the number of super-powered people is less than ten thousand. Only a powered parent could make a powered child.
And the first generation now reaching retirement age. What happens to the speedster when they develop arthritis? The brute with bulging discs in their back? The teleporter developing Alzheimer’s? The elementalist suffering from leukemia? The gazer developing glaucoma? The tank after their third heart attack?
The international government provided a solution. Some land off the upper peninsula of Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior reserved to build the first retirement home for powered beings. The staff are well trained, the facility built to handle all types of powers. Hero, villain, in between… that didn’t matter.
