What if the things that “go bump in the night” never retreated to the night? What if, instead, the creatures of myth and legend continued to openly coexist with humanity?
Because of the Arthurian Accords, they have and a semblance of peace has existed since the late 5th Century. Humanity has continued to remain dominant, both because of the speed of their population growth and their advanced technology, but almost every mythical or legendary creature has continued to survive, some flourishing, others only surviving because of the lobbying activities of various interest groups. For example, Grimwell Apothecary, now Grimwell Pharmaceuticals, had the Unicorn placed on the Endangered Species list centuries ago, with the small caveat that certain renewable resources, such as flakes of horn, tears and blood could be carefully harvested for medicinal purposes. The Grimwell Unicorn Oil is still one of the top selling health supplements on the market today.
The stereotypical good and evil dynamic is not necessarily as accurate as was originally thought, but was more of a cultural misunderstanding. For example, the troll under the bridge had purchased it from the prior owner for fair market value, had many No Trespassing Signs posted and had asked nicely for the annoying goats to leave his property, but they refused and attacked first. The Troll was within his rights to defend his home, even with deadly force, which, in this case, entailed devouring them, as he didn’t want to leave fresh goat meat to rot and he was hungry.
Sadly, you have recently become aware that some one or some thing is trying to destroy the peace that has existed for so long.
