There are universes that run parallel to ours. They’re filled with creatures: some hostile, some benign. The latter leave us alone. But when the windows open between our worlds, it is the former we have to worry about, as they invade ours to wreak havoc and spread chaos.
We are the Wardens, an organization of individuals gifted with the powers to fight the monsters threatening the world. It is the job of our operatives to make sure that our universe remains safe from harm. To be one of us, you must be the best of the best.
Every year, one hundred and twenty applicants are accepted to the most prestigious organization in the world. The Wardens are highly trained and skilled, even disregarding their superhuman abilities, a requirement for recruitment. Becoming a Warden means being set for life. The organization provides for the needs of every operative as well as their family, and offers higher status than nearly any other person in the world. But it’s not easy to become one.
The training process is also a culling process. Operatives work in teams, so the ten dozen trainees are split into twenty training squads of six. Through classes, exercises, and inter-squad games, they are ranked… and only the top teams, those who reach Rank Nine of the game-like training process, can receive the treasured Warden ring.
Squads are formed through mutual agreement between its members. Without fail, each year comes with its team of geniuses, a squad of fighters, a group of the popular. And, without fail, there is a squad of leftovers.
Maybe their powers were weak. Maybe someone was naturally unlikeable or openly hostile. Either way, the leftovers were the ones that no other team wanted, shoved together due to the fact that there was no other option. Such teams always failed. Not one leftover squad has ever reached Rank Nine.
Maybe this year, one will.
