“We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” - Carl Sagan
In Somnia, the people walk in dreams. Each dreamscape is a place one can visit with a curious mind, or just live in, ignorant of the rest of the scapes whirling through the omniverse. Not all bear lucid life, but the denizens of many scapes grow to be self-aware and sentient. This, it is said by some, is the way a dream becomes conscious of itself.
Perhaps in the long, unremembered past, there was a first dreamer. It would account for similarities within many scapes, such as temporal, linguistic, and environmental characteristics. Now, dreams and dreamers multiply and come to life on their own.
Somnia is the oldest, most established known dreamscape. While most scapes are small to medium sized, Somnia is a middling sized continent. It’s a strange one to say the least. People from many dreamscapes gather and live there, especially in the capitol city of Clarion. They are able to do so because of its flexible mode of governance, and the branch of it called The Vigil.
The Vigil deals with scapes that may pose a public safety problem, or need help. Of course, there’s also interest in the unique resources of new scapes, and any early memories or insights might be gleaned. In order to learn more effectively and thoroughly neutralize dangers, scapes can be anchored at Clarion. This makes them easier to travel to and from.
The Vigil is staffed by an assortment of Wards. A good Ward might be an explorer, a spy, a rescue worker, a diplomat, or something of a patchwork.
They might be sent to contact a single entity just becoming lucid in a scape, or a town full of them tipping over the cusp of sentience. They might be deployed to neutralize a nightmare–nightmares are usually without sentient life, as they are hostile environments. Every once in a while, however, they develop a terrifying self-aware being called a Revenant.
Some dreams might be ancient and still growing, and other fully formed within hours. Either might develop thriving life. A Ward could be from any type, or perhaps be descended from two people of a previous generation. Or, they might be a singularity–a lone entity developed in a solitary dream, sailing the omniverse for who knows how long before being hailed down. The possibilities are as endless as the dreams.
Now, however, you are Wards of the Vigil in Somnia’s capitol city of Clarion, based in a large complex called the Axon. It has many excellent facilities, which is fortunate as Wards live there along with some of the more newly recovered denizens of dreams. Momentarily, you will be assigned your new team.
More episodic than plotline oriented. More about character interaction and exploration than action, although there will be action.
