There is a world hidden beneath our own. It affects the lives of the common people without them ever knowing, but those who know where to look can find the patterns. Mass suicides, strange radio transmissions in the dead of the night, hidden messages carved into the brickwork of cyclopean buildings whose purpose was long forgotten.
It is a world that offers no reward but madness for those who are unfortunate or reckless enough to dwell into it. There is nothing to be gained from the knowledge of the infinitely malevolent entities beyond the stars, the gibbering horrors whose chains are slowly rusting away, the hungering abyss spewing forth our antithesis.
The only shred of hope for this dying world comes from the very forces that have been observing our rise and decline for untold aeons. Many people in recent times have been contacted in their dreams by the Whisperer, an unspeakable entity that refuses to disclose any information about itself. There is but one thing it speaks of.
It reveals the Secrets little by little to the hearers, willing or not. It speaks of the Demons, the danger they pose to us all, how little we can do to stop them. Then it gives a chance to change it all. Save everyone. It offers a wish for anyone who would take up powers capable of dealing with the eldritch threats. Who could decline such a generous offer?
In a different tale, these Guardians could truly be the heroes who will save the world. What they soon discover, however, is that reality is far different. It’s not a fight to win, but to survive, and as the world keeps crumbling around them, an increasing number of them discovers the painful truth.
The gift is poisoned.
Song of Anima is a Lovecraftian Horror game for 3-4 players. The characters are Guardians, humans who can see and fight the aberrant creatures known as Demons to protect the rest of mankind.
The tone is going to be very dark. Everything bad can and will happen to you. If you relish in your character’s suffering, then go ahead and apply.
Despite all the horrors surrounding you, and the high mortality rate, the narrative is still going to be focused on the character - so have an interesting personality, not just a cool power.
