The law is very clear: unless one of the Earl of Yewberry’s daughters marries and produces an heir, the title, and Spindle Hall, will transfer to the family of a distant relative. In the normal course of things, this would, of course, resolve itself naturally, but some rather bad news has arrived that makes this a question of some urgency.
Set in the rolling hills in northern Hampshire, near the rural village of Old Butlock, Spindle Hall is the ancestral seat of Corylus Filbert, 13th Earl of Yewberry, his wife Lady Constance, his family, and their staff. The 20th Century has brought many changes to this staid country manor, which struggles to maintain some of its old customs in the face of numerous challenges, which take the form of creditors; grasping relatives; impertinent tradesmen; and lovesick suitors to the numerous eligible young women installed in the mansion’s many sun-filled rooms.
