Even up to the last days of the Clone Wars, thousands of Jedi remained active in the galaxy, to say nothing of the further thousands of younglings and initiates in training at the Temple and abroad. In the hours immediately following Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s invocation of General Order 66, approximately nine of out every ten of them – from the eldest Jed Master, down to the newest youngling – perished.
A merciless campaign of extermination followed, led by the new Galactic Empire’s mysterious and terrifying chief enforcer, Lord Vader. In the end, all but a scant handful of the remaining Jedi died. For the most part, those few who survived the purges were the ones who discarded their lightsabers, let go of their training, and did their best to forget that they were once guardians of peace and justice.
Some, however, chose a different path.
Twelve years after Order 66 and the end of the Clone Wars, in the wretched, crime-infested depths of the faded city-world of Taris, five young survivors of the Jedi Purge remain, struggling to pass on what they can of their own incomplete training to a new generation of Force-sensitives, while still remaining hidden from the keen eye and long arm of the Empire.
The instructors at this ramshackle academy are:
Adara Moonrider – A female Human, she acts as instructor for most kinds of Force abilities, and is probably the most pragmatic of the academy’s leaders, though that’s really just a matter of degrees. In addition to her formidable knowledge of Force techniques, she is also a skilled lightsaber combatant and serves as the academy’s second line of defense, when needed.
Talya Olen – A female Human, she’s the academy’s go-to person for everything to do with technology, computers and slicing, droids, ship repair and maintenance – pretty much anything that involves a hydrospanner, plasma torch, or data spike. She teaches practical skills, and is a steady hand with a blaster, though her lightsaber hangs on her belt more out of old habit than anything else.
Varan Raysh – A male Human-Kiffar hybrid, he serves as combat instructor, as well as the academy’s “recruiter,” venturing out into the wider galaxy in search of young Force-sensitives to rescue out from under the ever-watchful eyes of the Galactic Empire. He’s also responsible for educating students in Jedi lore and philosophy, if only to help them to understand the Light Side, and how not to fall to the Dark.
Helping out are:
Kolbar Bibblur – A male Mon Calamari who was saved from Order 66 as a Jedi youngling, he helps out around the academy with any tasks that don’t expressly fall under anyone else’s purview. He knows when supplies are running low, who needs help with a given subject, and everything else that keeps the place running smoothly.
Savee – A female Cathar, also rescued from Order 66 as a Jedi youngling, and – informally – Varan’s direct second in matters of both instruction and defense. She’s roughly considered the seniormost member of the academy, aside from the three instructors, and Kolbar, for the most part, tends to follow her lead.
Taarma Ket – A female Nautolan pilot, knowledgeable in a lot of sparsely-traveled space-lanes, and capable with a blaster pistol. Not Force-sensitive, she sticks around out of a sense of loyalty to the fallen Galactic Republic.
Lombo Quoben – A male Ortolan mechanic, he keeps the basic (crumbling, ancient) academy infrastructure intact and operational. Likewise not Force-sensitive, he is also a believer in the Republic, trying to do his part.
As well as:
BD-3000-CC; “Ceecee” – A female-programmed luxury attendant droid, abandoned by her previous owner at the conclusion of the Clone Wars. Talya found her and restored her, augmenting her programming with medical protocols.
R2-N7; “Enseven” – A male-programmed astromech droid, long in loyal service to the Jedi Order. He was with Adara, Talya, Varan, Kolbar, and Savee when they survived Order 66, and he’s stayed with them, ever since.
R3-M4; “Emfor” – A male-programmed astromech droid, he used to work in military intelligence for the Galactic Republic, and is a sneaky little droid who puts his extensive knowledge and tremendous cunning to good use for the academy.
Shadow – Varan’s Nexu, found orphaned as a cub in the jungles of Taris, and raised at the academy.
