“There is a rare feeling of magic to be found in looking through a shop window on the walk home, when it is already dark and the wind is howling. It is a particular experience, that requires a particular kind of shop. Most shop windows are wholly unimaginative: nothing that provokes the senses, just white display lights and neatly dusted products.
No, when you pass a magical display, you know it in an instant. As you make your way home with hurried steps, the cold biting your toes, you have no choice but to stop and stare when you pass a store window of the special kind. Soft golden light shines through the windows, it is so hazy and warm that you forget about the cold. It smells like your favourite food, looks like your favourite person. A good shop window, well - it makes you a promise.
Salzburg, a children’s bookstore, was a shop like that. It was nestled on the ground floor of a corner building, which in turn bordered a star-shaped town square. Each leg of the star formed the beginning of a road paved with cobblestones, and at all hours of the day people came and went over the five roads, and so they passed by the bookstore and felt its magical glow.
It was a wonderful little shop, and the display kept its promise once you stepped inside. The wood floors greeted you with their creeking and books lined all the walls. But despite all that was lovely about it, the store was plagued with mystery. Very frequently, books fell off the shelves and coins disappeared from the till. In the dead of night, neighbours reported seeing bright lights inside the shop - but when police were called, they never found a thing.
Whatever Salzburg hides, it sure seems magical. And magic, so they say, needs both light and dark to come about.”
