Hello, hello, and welcome to the Cornette House: hotel and event venue set in lovely seaside South Carolina. I’m Ms. Reed, and I’ve been running this place for decades, seeing to every need of guests both living and dead. Oh, I’m sorry, yes you heard that correctly, dear. The venerable old Cornette House is of course one of the most haunted hotels in the state, as you can see in our brochure. Go on, grab a few, give them to your friends.
It’s not so easy to run a place like this. Living guests come knowing what they want, and that’s a specter, a spook, a voice from the Other Side. Other haunted locales, they do their best with legends of families axing each other in their beds and a single weeping lady roaming halls on the second Tuesday of every month. Now we have no less than four weeping ladies and they each do a round at least once a week. You see what I’m getting at? We deliver, that’s what we do. It’s our guarantee that you won’t leave Cornette House without a good solid haunting or your money back.
You might be asking how we ensure four weeping ladies roaming the halls, headless chefs banging around in the kitchen, echoing giggles of children, and all the other trappings. Well, that involves running a bit of an, ahem, side business as a resting house for spirits. You might imagine most ghosts are busy haunting abandoned shacks or seeking retribution against their murderers. But shacks get torn down for new outlet malls and murderers eventually die of liver failure in their 70s, and while some ghosts can move on with their un-life, some get a bit stuck here. And from what I’ve gathered, there’s nothing so frustrating as being an aimless ghost. Ghosts like haunting things, you know. It gives them a sense of purpose. I simply get the word out that my doors are open, and they come floating along and spend as much time as they like, so long as they make a few ominous creaks or pass through guests’ walls every so often.
And so we all get what we want. It’s a tidy way to earn a living, pardon the expression. Of course, it’s not all peaches and cream. Beachside property is quite desirable to the living, and it’s a bit of a battle keeping those pesky contractors away. And on the dead side, opening your house to the spirit world can have certain…consequences. There are some very old, very dangerous things out there. Very dangerous indeed.
Not that you need to worry about that, dear. But just as a fair warning. You never quite know what will happen next in the Cornette House
