In the Realm of Faerie, the Seelie and Unseelie Courts are nearly all-powerful, answering only to the Wild Hunt of the Sluagh. When a ruler dies, fae of both Courts come from all corners of the realm to attend a funeral and coronation. This takes place on the island of Mag Mell, which exists solely for this purpose, and is otherwise uninhabited. Each power tithes to the head of their Court, bringing precious and fantastical gifts. During this brief time of relative peace, no coercive magics or violence go unpunished. With the crown royal of the Seelie Court dead, such a gathering is occurring. All seems well until the head of the Unseelie Court suddenly and suspiciously dies too.
The two leaderless Courts quickly approach a dire conflict. To avoid a slaughter, an ancient rite of inquiry is invoked–by lottery, a group will be selected from all present in the city. They must reach a unanimous conclusion while compelled to speak truthfully. If they don’t succeed, the Courts will accept their punishment in place of the culprits to avoid disastrous conflict.
If they succeed, each will have their choice of an item from the tithe–one of the greatest treasures of Faerie.
