Long ago, on a planet on the edge of the galaxy, a king began his rule. He was Edrarian Nestar, king of men, mage of great power, and first person to achieve immortality. Through the use of a weapon known only to legend, the Siphon, the legends say he drained the gods themselves of their years, giving them to himself. Then, using his powerful magic, he erased it from existence. All who had worked in its creation forgot it, and heard the tale of how they had made a weapon that made their king a god secondhand, from the immortal himself. With that, the Endless Rule of Nestar began.
Many years later, you are called down to the Sunshell, the space station at the new center of the universe. An array of solar panels surrounds the sun, and domes rise out of the Shell at regular intervals, ringing the largest dome of all, the Palace of The Great Star. You are a Ship Lord and his Advisory Council, those who rule over the KingCrafts, the giant vessels used for the transportation of peasants to new homes and for engaging in cosmic combat with the enemies of the kingdom. As your ships dock around the palace, you think on the reasons for your arrival. All of the Ship Lords have been called to the Palace, asked to leave their peasants behind on temporary colony stations stationed around the galaxy for expressly this purpose. The peasants were not to hear what was about to be said. That was a privilege only given to the Ship Lords and their Councils.
You will arrive to hear the orders your king gives you, and you will follow them, for as his first words as an immortal say, “The gods are dead, now only kings can be followed. But under my hand, there will be but one king to serve.”
