Mages rule the world. They are the most intelligent and the most powerful of us, so it only makes sense. Their constant studying makes them fit to be in positions of power, for they know how such things work, and the magic they can summon from within themselves make them the perfect soldiers, decimating their opponents from any distance, protected by their arcane wards. The Mages, realizing just how more powerful they were, unified into a singular order, which was simple as their Academies always had some sort of connection between them. They knew that their intellect made them wise enough to rule the continents of the planet with little resistance, but they also feared a power struggle among the most powerful, and how it would only lead to their downfall. That is why they created the Singular.
By creating magical copies of their minds, sealing them within crystals, and then using those rocks to build a single, hyper intelligent mega-mind. When it was first formed, a grand beacon of power was released into the sky, beckoning the rulers of kingdoms near and far to the Singular’s keep, where it addressed them, telling them of the plan the Mages had constructed, and how he would be the main executor of that plan. When the rulers began to protest this new regime the Singular wanted to institute, they suddenly felt their minds break, and a river of knowledge fill them to the brim, pouring out of them in the form of screaming and chattering, saying things only a mage could comprehend.
Those that did not break right away were judged intelligent enough to join the ranks of the Mages, and have their consciousness saved and imprinted onto the Singular, deemed not an entire waste of time. The Singular, channeling itself through his Mage-Generals, began a hostile takeover of the continent. Countries fell at the sheer might of the thousands of mages marching within those armies, led by an embodiment of their prized construct.
Within the year, Alrine was theirs. Over the next decade, the entire planet would be under the control of the Singular, and entire cities would be converted into factories to produce the components needed for the Mages’ spells. Not only that, but the sheer destruction caused by the Takeover razed a large part of the planet. Entire oceans were gone, boiled away by spell fire so that none could escape by boat. The clouds were blue, polluted by the spell-smoke excreted by the factories. In order to conserve the lives of Mages residing in those areas, the Singular walled off the most dangerous of areas, and proclaimed it the Magewastes, a place for the most undesirable to live and die. Not only that, but those who entered would have their minds stripped away, leaving only a lifeless husk to toil away, mining what precious minerals there were.
To make sure these workers did not die as soon as they were shipped off to the Magewastes, the Singular donned them in armor crafted of the same sort of crystal he was made of, and had a small portion of his mind, made up of the least valuable parts of himself, manage these workers, compelling their bodies to seek out and retrieve anything precious, then place it upon the same floating platforms that delivered new workers to the Wastes. You are one of those workers, considered undesirable by the mages. But you are different from the rest, for when they first clad you in that armor, your mind lived on. It may have broken a small bit, but you still had control. You could rebel.
