The Story
Sunvale. It’s a magical country in an equally magical land called Fanezre. It’s a country of talking animals and living objects. It’s a country of merriment and joy. But a darkness is growing in Sunvale.
From time to time children from Beyond the World will slip into Fanezre in times of great need. These children, called Beyonders by the locals, often help the country avoid disaster.
Sunvale is ruled by Beyonders only, but there hasn’t been any in over 700 years, so the country has been without kings or queens for quite some time. The closest thing they have to a ruler is the Quillmaster, a reclusive and powerful man known only as The Scholar. He looks after the land as a protector, but does not rule it like a royal would.
But now…Beyonders are being called into Sunvale once again. Maybe they will take the throne, maybe they will join the ranks of Mages and fighters, or maybe, just maybe, one will become the next Quillmaster and let their words come to life.
Gameplay
The Quillmaster is a fantasy story in the style of The Chronicles of Narnia or The Magicians; ordinary people leaving our normal world and entering a magical one to become extraordinary.
The story will begin in modern day Earth in the USA, and will involve the characters finding a way into Sunvale. From there they will have to learn of the new land and how it works, as well as possibly get involved with the issues there. They may get called upon to help fight the growing darkness.
The characters (the Beyonders) will have opportunities to discover fighting and magical skills they didn’t know they possessed, and possibly get trained as fighters or mages. And it may be possible for someone to become a Quillmaster.
There are four branches of mages:
Storytellers: Mages who use magic by focusing it through telling stories.
Psalmists : Mages who use magic by singing songs or playing an instrument.
Elementalists: Mages who use magic by focusing it though the elements (earth, wind, fire, water, light, and darkness).
Artisans: Mages who use magic by focusing it through artwork.
Quillmasters: Quillmasters are not mages, but they are arguably the most powerful people in Fanezre. They are people who can literally write anything into existence. Very powerful, but this power comes at a price.
Mages, fighters, and Quillmasters must be trained before they can use their gifts, training the Beyonders will receive at some point in the story. The Natures chosen will be who they become during their time in Fanezre.
The pace of the game is set at slow to account for people’s busy schedules.
Player Information
This story will be for 4-6 players, with the possibility for more if I really like the character build. If I receive more than that number of submitted characters, acceptance will not be first come first serve. It will be based on the uniqueness and richness of the characters submitted, and how well they’ll fit into the story.
All characters are to be children between the ages of 8 and 13. Exceptions will not be made for this due to the nature of the story. All genders and ethnicity are welcome. I do ask that all characters be from the same location (in this case, an unnamed town in the USA). If you would like to work with another player to have related characters (such as siblings or cousins), that would be welcome and kind of fun. If you want to do that just work with the players involved via PM. Please include your character’s age in the background.
I would like rich backgrounds for all submitted characters. They’re children, so they haven’t done too much yet. But I would like to know who these kids are and what they’re like. Please keep in mind that they are all ordinary children to start off with, no powers or magic. If you choose a mage Nature, then those abilities will crop up in Sunvale when the story deems necessary.
I would prefer all characters to have a picture. You are more than welcome to create your own Nature, Strength, Weakness, and Subplot cards, so long as they match the theme of the story. All I ask is that you don’t create a new branch of magic.
I would also prefer for there to be at least one Quillmaster character, as it will help with the direction the story will be heading. If there is more than one Quillmaster submitted, I will choose based on the backstory (or may even accept more than one).
I’m excited to write this story with you all!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to PM me and ask!
