Inter-realm travelers have many names for it, depending on how fair its winds are to their sails: the Void, the Aether, the Surreal Realm, Purgatory. All refer to the hazy, violet plane in-between the planes. It touches all Realms, the name travelers give to the multiple worlds, lands, and universes from whence they where born. The Surreal, on the other hand, is the limitless margins between these “real” worlds.
Nobody is born in the Surreal. Nobody knows if one can be born in the Surreal. Nobody knows it’s dimensions; if the Surreal has a center, it would be Port Noble. Back in the days of the first travelers, they possessed something – maybe it was tech, maybe magick, sadly it’s lost to us – that allowed them to stabilize a small part of the Surreal. That parcel became a hub, Port Noble, a safe harbor between Realms where travelers could trade, hire, or relax.
From Port Noble, a traveler with the right tech or magick can break through into any Realm – with limits. Travelers are not allowed to enter Realms whose citizens have not discovered the ability to traverse the Surreal. The only exception to this ban is the conglomerate airship Chimaera, and its captain, the Lady Finch.
Captain Finch is a polarizing figure in Port Noble. She arrived many years ago from a Realm which has not yet discovered Surreal travel, an unheard-of feat. The Chimaera’s mission is to catalogue the various Realms and their denizens, a mission that allows her to work around the restrictions most travelers face. Her fans praise her dedication to science and knowledge, but critics loudly note that her pursuits seem to involve more adventure than academia.
Your perspective is a bit different, though, because you’re a member of Chimaera’s crew.
