Let no good tragedy go to waste.
Certainly words to live by now-a-days, caught in the middle of the apocalypse and a military dictatorship. That’s why nobody was surprised when they heard that NoVa zone was running on a skeleton crew. It was bound to happen. Too many had died.
A quarantine zone required a full troop of soldiers to operate, but they could stretch with half of that if necessary. They kept the doors locked, the peace inside, and the infected out. NoVa zone forces had been dwindling recently, but they kept calm, kept the public in the dark, that is until they couldn’t deny the truth. They had only one third of a troop left that was combat-ready, and the next serious push by the infected, or the next organized looter raid, would push them past their limits and the zone would fall.
This was understood, and was what drove the wealthiest in the zone to want to leave.
This is why we need you.
Backstory
This story will not be an exploration of the events leading up to this post-apocalyptic world, but rather the events and actions of those living within it. Without going too far into the mire, there was a serious infection that quickly spread through the world and turned those infected into living vectors for the infection. Any blood-blood contact can transmit the infection, so bites, cuts, and other contact are the means by which the infected try to reproduce. These are not “undead” zombies, but the infection affects the brain in that the individual is compelled to infect others, often by violent means.
We’re dropping in on this story about 15 years after the initial outbreak. Long enough that people realize it’s not going away.
Your characters will start as part of the NoVa population, struggling to survive within a martial law environment, with limited food (distributed through ration tickets), and dwindling morale. You are not allowed out of the zone, which is built up around what used to be the Dulles International Airport.
Character Submission
I’ve left in some roles and strengths and weaknesses, but feel free to create your own. What I do require is that you make your own subplot card, so that your character’s initial story arc is your own.
Your character submission should follow this format:
Age:
Gender:
Twitter Bio: (Here just fill out what your character would have written. 140 characters that explains their personality and a little about them.)
Opening Move: (For this, write what would be your character’s introduction to the story, basically your first move in-game. It doesn’t have to be long or particularly in-depth, just enough to give us a sense of who the character is. Why do we like them? What do they want? Why are they willing to sign up for this particular mission? This can be copy-pasted into the first scene or edited as necessary when the game actually begins.
The writing prompt for this opening move is that your character receives a letter, via courier, that reads:
Greetings,
Your presence is requested in the sky lounge, for an urgent matter. Your attendance will be rewarded with a ration ticket, though that may not be the greatest reward for joining.
Sincerely
Jonathan Black
As you open the letter, a ration ticket flutters onto the ground, proof that the sender was serious.
This story will be open for submission for one week at which point I will select the best entries. This is not first-come, first-served, and I will not accept anyone until the week is over, so don’t lose heart if you don’t hear anything right away. Everyone will be accepted at the same time.
