That was the year the old world ended. The year that space travel finally became cheap enough for a tourist to fly to the moon and back as a quick family vacation, and for a trip to mars to become a common destination for those looking for cheap land to move to. Then the corporations came. All of them had differing names but the same goal of complete control over every space market that existed, from travel to produce they soon owned everything and created their own countries on the planets humanity had colonized.
Then the governments of the world, rather than push back the corporations, pushed the boundaries of human limitations in space. They sent us farther out into the solar system, colonizing more and more planets until there was none left to colonize. Then the corporations begun buying land and monopolies and slowly taking control of the cities with their money and “Security” Forces.
But then, hope seemed to rekindle itself when the corporation on one of Jupiter’s moons was exposed for holding illegal experimentation on the local wildlife there. The UP quickly moved to shut them down and began a intense investigation into all other major corporations in the Solar system.
For a time, humanity was at peace.
But then we expanded out of our own solar system, to Proxima Centauri, and built major cities there. These cities proved to be breeding grounds for all types of terrible people: space pirates, mercenaries and major criminals, and the UP did not have the time, money, or manpower to suppress these people.
This is where E-Corp. comes into the picture, bringing promises of peace and prosperity along side of a focus on keeping the environment healthy. They presented all sorts of plans and charts that showed some form of a positive effect, and eventually were able to pressure the UP into allowing them to take private control of the capital of Proxima Centauri, Niacoa, in order to prove their effectiveness. They proved themselves and blew all expectations out of the water: 80% cleaner air and streets, 90% employment and housing increase, and 99% reduction in all major crimes. These numbers were good enough for everyone, and thus the UP allowed them full privatized control over Proxima Centauri.
If you couldn’t guess by now, E-Corp. was never in it for protecting the people. Almost as soon as they were given permission to take control of the planet, all UP Peacekeeping forces were moved off of Proxima Centauri and E-Corp.’s secret police, led by ex-mercenary Issac Maguire, took over. These soldiers suppressed public opinion, killing people in their homes or dragging them off to massive underground prison complexes to rot. The lucky ones, myself included, were able to escape either before the takeover or were able to sneak away while no one was looking.
