This story takes place immediately after the events in “Gin and Miskatonic” and “Name Your Poison.”
Dr. Benjamin Minskii has seemingly absconded with a box found in the arms of the freshly-dead rum runner Mike Aveline. The box has been identified as a long-sought twin to that that held an important South American religious artifact which itself seems tied to Aveline’s rival “Diamond” Jake Jefferson. But why would Minskii, a brilliant but eccentric academic, do such a thing?
It’s a warm Indian Summer morning in the town of Arkham, with just a hint of Fall’s crispness as a reminder of how short is this respite from the inevitable darkness and cold. But for now the sky is blue, the smell of the docks is more of tangy salt and tar than seagull shit, and the bells and clip-clopping of the knife sharpener’s horse-drawn wagon play a familiar New England tune.
The address on the business card given to the group by Armitage led to a locked door, but the janitor lazily mopping the hallway said “Try Gudgen’s. Sam gets a shave and a trim most Saturdays.”
Gudgen’s had two chairs and plenty of waiting. A dozen men stood and sat, exchanging gossip, off-color jokes, and ever-so-casually extracting the magazines that lay beneath a thin layer of “Field & Stream.”
